What do you see?

“Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing.” ~ Camille Pissarro

Had an interesting, strange feeling when a friend of mine asked me as to what is in this painting. This has been with me for a few months now and every time I look at it in its full glory, there is a feel good feeling inside on seeing how deception could be an art. Why am I feeling good? Because I see something in this image. I wonder how, sometimes getting a wider perspective or looking from a distance can sometimes give more detail than the microscopic eye. I wish to see how many of you see the same thing as I did, make a pattern in it. Make many patterns in it. Tell me what you see. It’s an image I found somewhere online. Please do let me know, either in the shoutbox alongside, or as comment. Though I see it very clearly, my friend could not find anything. And don't see what others said before you have you own say, please.

These are slightly different days, and are expected to stay so for the coming few weeks. The last rites and sermons of four long years at this place I have been are being delivered before the memories are finally drawn out as we walk out of this place. What I feel about the preachers here?
That would be for some other time. For now, I am standing on the edge gazing at the universe.

“People believe I am what they see Me as, rather than what they do not see. But I am the Great Unseen, not what I cause Myself to be in any particular moment. In a sense, I am what I am not. It is from the Am-notness that I come, and to it I always return.”
~ Neale Donald Walsch

Appears like an amalgamation of two images. Both being faces, in one of them there is a person whose face is clearly visible with one eye open, and the other face has an eye closed.

Though, the two faces seem to be joined by some common thing, however, this being my interpretation.....

Hi Anshul,

I can clearly see two faces ..one is kissing the other on her cheeks , both looks female to me ...
from one eyes ..it looks she might has gone through rough patch in life ..while other is easing her emotions and supporting her ..

what you have seen in the pic ?

One way i saw it was life and death, the open eye and the closed eye resp. Troubled in life and peaceful in death.

Second way of looking at it was of affection. That gentle kiss on the cheek by the person on the right.

Third (from an artist's point of view) thats one tough painting! Would love to attempt something like this!
Especially love the framing... shattered glass look.. thats making me interpret many other things but ill stop writing now!

When I was scrolling down the screen, Pic was half. I thought they are two Rocks, along side of the sea. Both rocks have one eye. One is closed and other one is opened. One is ready to face and other has turned down it’s face.
When I scroll down completely, Pic was clear, I thought a girl is kissing guy. And guy is surprised by a gesture.
But After sometime when I kept on looking at it, I realized this pic is taken at the back of the car seat when a girl gave kiss to girl. But the photo is torn apart that’s why there is one eye and incomplete face of the girl

Hi Anshul, I see two faces. One has the eyes closed. Must be in peace. The other has eyes opeened. Must be due to worry. The Pic probably depicts two phases of life - ups and downs??

Waiting for you to reveal your answer.

Cheers

I could make out 2 sets of eyes...one closed and another open, in fact to be true when I first looked at the pic the eye which was open looked like it hid secrets ...mysterious just like the night and the bat!

And the closed eyes is a symbol of peace and acceptance that there are things that we know exist they maybe be earth shattering but yet somewhere we accept them calmly.

Now that was what I could see and interpret....

Do let me know what does it really mean to you !

Take Care.

Need I say more? :-)

a guy easing her by kissing her and saying a last goodbye closing his eyes forever and (the upper part of the pic as suggests) he's perfectly amalgated into her mind, a permanent impression he's gone away but their union has been so perfect that his physical presence evn if does not exist he's so perfectly blended into her mind that it can never be her alone.. its always they!!
i hope i made sense :)(little bit at least!!!!)

@Everybody
I am glad most of us see two faces. I won't argue that the faces have the features depicting masculinity or the tenderness of the feminine. I won't try to make out from the lip shapes whether the faces are happy or any one of them is not. I won't deny that goodbyes are being exchanged, neither would I reject the possibility of a love confession. I don't deny any of your explanations, neither do I have the right to. The picture is not mine. One thing for sure I see is, a KISS.
And ~nil, yes, you might want to add something more, I don't see a paradox. Enlighten me.

Interesting one.
I can see two faces , the girl's face is filled with sorrow while the other is sort-of enjoying.
But I think there is something much more that what I have said.
So waiting for your reply:)

i see a "him" who thought he could kiss away the agony and fear. i see a "she", who when turned around to tell him that she has found her light...that he has succeeded, found him gone, broken. she has to turn to look into sepia again to find him.

Aashayein said...

The first thing I saw within a second is "someone" kissing another "someone"....after that no matter how hard I try I could not see anything else!
I really liked the pic and I am copying it !
(Hope you won't mind:-P)

I could see a gal and a guy who is kissing her on the neck... The pic is nice but somehow depressing... The gal looks so sad...

Miss D said...

The kisser portrays ignorant and oblivious love and the person being kissed is confused between delight and regret,which forms the look of pain.

Beautiful, beautiful portrait.

Miss D said...

Also, I might add that this memory hasn't been taken care of... thrown away with things of petty importance...
Only when someone stares at it, he/she understands the intensity of that very moment.

I see eyes. I see two faces. Deeply bound by purity, truth and love. Looks like they're two bodies but in truth share a soul. :

Beautiful image.

I see a kiss between two people...one who is happy...the other unaffected or pretending to be. Loved the quote at the end....
take the time to lean back and stare...soon it will be speeding by and you unable to spare a glance.
nice post to make one ponder...

emm emm I see nothing in d pic except an eye! on left!

Blasphemous Aesthete said...

Its really interesting how everyone has a different eye, how every reaction is similar and dissimilar from each other.
@Noor, don't worry, you are not the only one.:)

mk said...

what I saw, and as the other have seen..two faces yes..both are gals..or one guy other gal...can't say,

still..one is earnest and with all caring, does he kisses..while the other is in two minds, is she sad? or depressed...

will that pain be gone with the kiss, can't say...but the eyes do show pain...you can make out many meaning out of it...each expression can signifies many things...
what I percieve would change depending on mood, depending on the time I give to think about it...for me, its two images with a deep contrast in it!!

Intern said...

the expression on the face looks kinda cold. looks like a piece beaten by time and the face holding something unique. there is another person on the right, who was hard to decipher. but once u get her into the picture, the image gives a whole new perspective :D

i noticed the other person only after a while :P now it looks like a very sweet picture :D

Lilangel said...

It looks like the girl is sad possibly about fear of what the future holds but is being comforted by the guy with a hope for a great tomorrow gleaming in his smile...:)

Love all way :)

I see the vacant and the sterile wrapped up in intensity...trying to reach through a kiss amidst acute helplessness... and their pain percolates through the pores of hunger and longing..the mysterious agony of true love

and by the way the article's not that good

It appears like a couple. A sad looking girl and her guy trying to make her feel better..

sulagna said...

anshul honestly , i tried being intelligent and deciphering some "more" meaning :) but dimaag zyada chala nahi

yes but surprisingly i found the closed eye prettier than the open one. In a way isnt that what life is all about, when you try to understand everything it gets complicated, but close your eyes, let things run their own ground, and things will fall in place !

Ah! I think it's a snapshot of the dark existence of a being playing two characters at the same time in the delirious theatre of phantasma. Innocence being sucked out from one by oneself by an attractive vile mean, and the eyes gradually losing its poignancy to turn into a blank stare.

I'll show you my paintings sometime. :)

And, I have a couple of years more to grind at the place that has discharged you!

Blasphemous Aesthete said...

@All
No worries Sulanga. I just wanted to know what you saw in the first glance, and everyone, everyone amongst you have given in much more than that. It's itself giving me a very nice experience, looking at it from some many pair of eyes.

@Lioness
The ones who read you, make you. And they, are always welcome.

@Sayak
I'll look forward to doing that (the paintings) buddy.

Hmmm...what do I see here?
Two faces...a kiss...a web around it...lines moving helter skelter...does that indicate complications...a sorrowful end.
The open eye seems to be looking into the future...sees more than it wanted to.
The closed eye wants to move into oblivion.
Also is there a chasm on top...a valley between two mountains...
Something’s breaking the lovers apart although there’s light shining through!
Torn edges as though the sheet is crumbling down!

My god...I think I over did it in trying to find the depth that you have found here Anshul.
I’ll just say that it is beautiful...even in all that haze and all the mystery that it symbolises :-)

P.S. What edge is this that you are standing on?
These are, like I read somewhere...the ghats of the only world:-)
All the best and may the gaze bring you peace and contentment:-)

I saw two sides of one world..one is black the other is white..one is all watching and the other has shut to itself..when you have your eyes open you are surrounded with good and bad both and you have to make decisions like black and white color represents the good and bad choices around the open eye...
the closed eye is at more peace and sanctity surrounded with white all the more..

It is indeed capturing and i remember seeing it in you blogger image some days..

It's the world in the painting!

Wow i say this and after that look at the answers..i never noticed :)

Blasphemous Aesthete said...

@Deepika
I claim no copyrights over the image, I also found it somewhere over the internet.

@Suruchi
The more I look at this picture, the more peaceful it gets. You know, that face on the left, it isn't too sad either, I find it happy.
What edge am I standing on? Umm, on the verge of crossing over into a different place (world)

@Alcina
Actually,
Black or White,
if I close my eyes,
Its all the same

I'll let everyone know what I found in it once the suitable words are drafted.

I dont know why but at first time I saw an animal with its wide mouth open, them after intent look the face of a curious fearful person with a tear in its eye wanted to be heard, besides it the calm closed eyes face! It all depends on our perception and the thoughts going on the time we look at the image.

The picture paints a saga in front of the viewer's eyes. It narrates a story that is now well in the past, but the scars of which still remain.

An open, expressionless eye - could that be of a silent observer who has just witnessed a tyranny of fate? Mighty chances, it is so! The face, through her eyes shows an enchanted disinterest in anything that is happening in the immediate surrounding. It is lost in the horrors of another world, still trying to sort out the chain of events that could have led to such an unacceptable outcome.

The other face, with his eyes closed as if indulging with all his sincerity as he kisses the distracted dame is the one with the secrets. He shuts any door that might allow anyone to invade into his world - the closed eye symbolic of that. The kiss is nothing more than a guilty mind's effort to make amends, for if there was love, and if he truly cared, he would have seen the distraction in his muse's eye.

Whether, he was the cause of the trauma that we see in her eyes remains a mystery - nonetheless, a possibility (for we cannot ignore the frame resembling shards of broken glass akin to the sharpness of pain born of broken dreams).

And, maybe there lies the beauty of it all.

Just a guess...

When I first looked at it, I had no idea what I was looking at. Though reasons might vary, like I was looking for a texture and a face was the last thing on my mind. But yes, the point is, the more I look at this image, the more peaceful it seems.

@Ankita
It is a nice interpretation.

@Dip
Correct, even I seeked no more until others made me notice it here. :)
